Before the gloom and gothic textures, The Cure made sharp, catchy, angular pop-punk. Their 1979 debut is a strong record and something of an oddity in their catalogue: poppier and more rooted in its late-’70s moment than anything that followed. A great place to start, or a great piece to add if you already know the dark stuff.
